The bottom of the climb

Glenbrook sits at about 163 metres — the first town up from the Nepean and the lowest, warmest and driest place on this list. The streets run back from Ross Street and the station towards Glenbrook Lagoon, Park Street and Lucasville Road, with Glenbrook Park dating to 1884 and Chalmers Lookout above the gorge. Lennox Bridge at Mitchells Pass and the 1865 Knapsack Gully Viaduct are both just down the hill.

What matters for a roof is that the climate here is not mountain climate. Frost is a rarity rather than a routine, there is no snow, and the freeze-thaw cycling that destroys ridge pointing at Katoomba barely registers. Different altitude, different fault list.

What actually goes wrong down here

Heat and ultraviolet. Summer sun on a west-facing pitch chalks out a tile coating and makes old sealants and sealant-only flashing details go hard and crack. Surfaces age faster here than they do above Lawson, even though the roof stays dry.

Leaf and bark load. The gorge and the national park bring mature eucalypts right into the suburb, and Glenbrook Creek and the lagoon edges are heavily treed. Gutters and valleys fill continuously.

Bushfire exposure. Blocks on the gorge and national park edges sit on mapped bush fire prone land like most of the local government area, so ember detailing at the roof edge is a real consideration even at this altitude.

Thermal movement on metal. Bigger daily temperature swings in summer than people assume, which finds lazy sheet laps and over-driven fixings.
